Can USG Durock® Brand Cement Boards be used on the interior and exterior of buildings? Yes. They can also be used in below-grade applications such as basements.

Can cement board be used externally?

Yes. As the boards are easily curved without any detrimental effect to their performance, they can be installed, and taped and jointed in an offsite factory application and moved around without issue.

Can cement board be used as siding?

While you can use cement board instead of drywall, it’s not always practical. For starters, cement board is 2-3 times the cost of drywall. It’s also harder to find cement boards in the larger 4 x 8′ sheets. Cement board does have its place, though, and is very useful for high moisture rooms.

Do you need to use Redgard over cement board?

Grout is porous, sealing it won’t protect you. Also, You need one vapor barrier either behind it or over it. Redguard would be an over it application.
