What is sPOD? sPOD is a family-owned company dedicated to creating precision power distribution systems for off-road vehicles, agricultural equipment, utility vehicles, race rigs, 12/24-volt equipment… in short, for anything with a battery.
What line is sPOD on?
A 50lb braided leader is perfect. Your mainline for spodding can be either a dedicated floating spod braid or in more recent times a lighter mono such as 10lb which can be easier to work with for some anglers with less chance of wind knots and braided line tangles.
Do you need braid for Spodding?
Braid or Mono? A 30lb braid will do the job in most spodding scenarios, but don’t go much lower than that without the use of a shock leader (we’ll cover that in a moment). Mono line is also a good choice for spodding and is more resistance to tangles and wind knots.
How often should you spomb?
As a rule of thumb, put two or three in every five minutes, but once again be accurate, especially when spodding over Zigs as you do not want a mid water shoal moving off you.
Can you SPOD with a normal rod?
An ordinary 2.5lb or 2.75lb test curve rod coupled with a standard free spool reel loaded with 12lb line could just about cope with spodding a small amount of bait short distances, but to get the most from this deadly technique you’ll need a special set-up.

Using a fine 20lb Spod braid coupled with a 50lb braided shock leader will give you the perfect set-up for safe spodding.
What test curve should a SPOD rod be?
4lb to 5lb
The best rods are specialiy designed spod rods having test curves of around the 4lb to 5lb mark. These will easily be able to cope with the stresses of casting filled spods that could weigh in excess of 6oz – maybe even 10oz in some circumstances.
Do I need a shock leader for Spodding?
Always use a shock leader when casting a spod or spomb, again to help reduce the chance of a crack off. ALSO don’t forget to use a finger stall because braid can slip, and it cuts fingers very easily.
