What is the full form of ITP?
Immune thrombocytopenic purpura (ITP) is a blood disorder characterized by a decrease in the number of platelets in the blood. Platelets are cells in the blood that help stop bleeding.
What is ITP status?
The prevalence (how many adults have ITP at any time) is 9.5 cases per 100,000. The annual prevalence is estimated at 5.3 per 100,000 among children; because children with ITP usually recover, the number of children who have ITP at any one time is almost equal to those diagnosed annually.
Is ITP immunosuppression?
It is mainly considered that treatment of ITP increases the risk of infections (e.g., corticosteroids, and other immunosuppressive agents). However, recently, it is shown that infection is not only related to the immunosuppressive treatment in chronic ITP but also to the etiology of the disease itself [5].
Can someone with ITP donate blood?
Thrombocytopenia. Individuals with thrombocytopenia should not be accepted as blood donors because of the risk of bleeding at the venepuncture site and because chronic thrombocytopenia may be associated with serious underlying haematological or other systemic disease.
What virus causes ITP?
Disorders associated with ITP include lymphoproliferative disorders, autoimmune and collagen vascular diseases, and chronic infections. The two predominant viral causes of secondary ITP are the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and the hepatitis C virus (HCV).
Can ITP turn into MDS?
Previous research has described the development of Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS) in patients with a previous diagnosis of ITP, and even the presence of MDS associated with genetic background.
Is ITP high risk for COVID-19?
ITP onset or worsening has been reported with some frequency following viral infections and anecdotally following other vaccines. Based on current knowledge, the risks associated with COVID-19 disease appear to outweigh the risks associated with SARS-CoV-2 vaccination in ITP patients.
What painkillers can I take with ITP?
ITP patients who need pain relief for aches and pains are told to take acetaminophen, rather than aspirin or ibuprofen products that can affect their platelets.
Can you take Tylenol with ITP?
Do not take aspirin or other anti-inflammatory medicines (such as ibuprofen or naproxen) without first talking to your doctor. Ask your doctor if it is okay to use acetaminophen (Tylenol). Do not take two or more pain medicines at the same time unless the doctor told you to.
