What is the average diameter of an exhaust pipe?
Proper exhaust-pipe size is a function of both engine output and displacement.

How do I choose the right size muffler?
Good Way To Estimate: Take engine RPM x engine displacement, then divide by two. This is the intake volume. Use this same volume of air for the exhaust system, but then correct for thermal expansion (you need to know exhaust temps to figure things out).
How much horsepower do you need for a 3-inch exhaust?
Our 3-inch exhaust baseline netted 527 whp at 19 psi. With the 3.5-inch exhaust, it climbed to 567 whp with a peak gain of 66 whp at 6000 rpm in fourth gear. At 29 psi, we went from a baseline of 699 to 740 whp. Peak gains here were 52 whp at 6100 rpm.
Is exhaust measured ID or OD?
Most exhaust piping is going to be measured using OD dimensions which is outer dimensions of the pipe or the outer diameter. That means if you were to purchase a three-inch pipe—let’s say like the one we have here—the outside diameter of this pipe would actually be three inches.
Does exhaust pipe diameter affect sound?
This also applies to the diameter of your exhaust pipes. Louder pipe means that there is more space for sound waves to spread and out and not get bounced into each other. Which means they will sound louder. But again, not so much louder because bigger exhaust pipes will only be 1” or 1.5” wider than stock.
Is 3-inch exhaust too big?
The general rule of thumb for exhaust systems is, as we said 3-3.5in for 250-350whp, above that 4″ exhaust is the right size, but that’s about as big as you want to go, even at the 400whp-500whp level.
Is exhaust pipe ID or OD?
Piping is most often measured in O.D. dimensions. It is designed to slip inside other components, most often a muffler. Mufflers and exhaust tips are most often measured in I.D.
Is bigger exhaust pipe better?
The more exhaust your engine produces, the less the gas expands. The less it expands, the less it cools, and the faster it goes. So, basically, bigger exhaust means more power at high RPMs, and less power at low RPMs.
What is louder 2.5 or 3-inch exhaust?
3″ should be louder than 2.5″ if all parts are the same. If the muffler is raspy, you’ll hear more rasp at 3″.
